Hobart is the capital and largest city in Tasmania, yet it is free from overcrowding, traffic congestion, serious pollution and major crime. Situated close to the mouth of the Derwent River and nestled in the foothills of Mount Wellington, it seems that nearly every home, office and classroom has a magnificent view. The city is located in the state's south-east on the estuary of the Derwent River. The skyline is dominated by Mount Wellington at 1,271 metres. Tasmania's capital city, Hobart is an intriguing blend of heritage, lifestyle, scenery and vibrant culture. It's abuzz with restaurants, markets, fabulous festivals, harbours and stunning waterfronts dotted with timber boats. Tasmania has a population of just over 500,000 – about 2.3% of the total Australian population. Hobart is Australia’s second oldest city- the capital and most populous of the island state of Tasmania, with approximately 200,000 residents. With an estimated population of 500,000, Tasmania occupies an area of 68,401 square kilometres and is celebrated as ‘the natural state’- due to its pristine and largely untouched natural environment. Hobart serves as a busy seaport, a base for trade, as well as Australian and French operations in Antarctica.
